Leadership in Construction: Filling the Skills Gap

Greg will touch on the current skills gap in the construction industry at all levels which is felt most prominently in project management. He will speak to how we can fill this gap, on the leadership and  values it takes to excel in the construction industry and what the future holds for British Columbia.

Please Note: This event is a standing cocktail mixer. Guests will not be seated for dinner but enough food will be served to satiate even the largest of appetites. Come prepared to meet and mingle with Vancouver Island’s project management community and listen to an engaging speaker – all while earning PDUs!

Speaker Bio:

Greg-BayntonGreg Baynton has been the CEO of the Vancouver Island Construction Association (VICA) since 2006. He is a native Victorian, a tradesman, business owner, and was a member of VICA for nearly 30 years prior to becoming CEO. He brings a diverse background and experience owning and operating trade and general contracting firms on the island and the mainland. During this time his firms were active members of BC and US based industry associations. In 1999, Greg was the recipient of the Northwest Wall and Ceiling Bureau’s coveted Industry Person of the Year Award. Greg’s experience and reputation in the BC construction community is an asset in serving the 500 members of VICA and the construction community on Vancouver Island.

The PMI-VI Professional Development Conference will be an engaging 2 day event (May 4 – 5, 2017) with up to 7 exceptional speakers from Canada, and around the world.

Position:  PD Conference Corporate Sponsorship Developer

We are looking for a volunteer to develop relationships with corporate sponsors for the PD Conference.

Aligning with the Chapter is an excellent opportunity for organizations who want to demonstrate their commitment to the project management profession and connect with the project management community on Vancouver Island. The Corporate Sponsorship Developer volunteer will be asked to reach out to organizations to offer the benefits and opportunities associated with sponsoring the PMI-VI 2017 PD Conference.

Required from you

We are looking for a Corporate Sponsorship Developer who is willing to commit to the following:

  • available between Dec 20, 2016 – February 28, 2017
  • 1-2 hours per week to contact or follow-up with potential sponsors, possibly 2-4 hours per week during peak times
  • a friendly demeanour
  • organizational skills

PD Conference Volunteer Benefits to you

  • You will contribute to the success of a Professional Development Conference, an exciting learning opportunity for Project Management practitioners.
  • You will be working along with some of the Chapter’s Board to promote a world-class experience to members and non-members alike.
  • You will earn 1 PDU per hour of volunteer time (up to the PMI maximum under Giving Back to the Profession category).

The Art of Creating an Unforgettable Experience

Aidan Henry is the Founder and Creative Director behind Brink Events. Scott Dewis and Anita Pawluk will speak on RaceRocks 3D’s involvement with the Royal Canadian Navy’s Project Resolve

Project Resolve – Learning Should Be Entertaining

RaceRocks 3D (RR3D) is a Victoria based education firm developing learning and training tools that integrate augmented reality, simulation, games, and video storytelling for the military, major corporations and government. Their innovative approaches to designing interactive training using technology has won them the contract to build a 3D immersive environment (Serious Game) which will be used to train Royal Canadian Navy personnel on a ship while it is still being built. This allows the crew to be trained before the ship is even delivered. Scott Dewis and Anita Pawluk, partners at RR3D, will present on their Serious Gaming solution and their approach to managing such a complex project. Once an Emmy Award-winning visual effects artist, Scott Dewis (RR3D’s CEO & Co-Founder) has since developed a new company with the purpose of making learning entertaining by aligning learning with the way people think. As a leader in this field, his organization does work for Boeing, Bentall Kennedy, the Royal Canadian Navy, and the University of Victoria.  “At RaceRocks we believe that the heart of a highly trained naval force is its people. We train people. Our mission is to align learning with the way those people think, work and play.”

Anita Pawluk is RaceRocks 3D’s Co-Founder, Director of Operatons & Controller. She is the lead Project Manager for Project Resolve. Her experience spans many sectors; including Information Technology, Construction and Land Development and Business Development. Over the past decade, she has been part of a rapidly growing Global Internet Company, Construction and Land Development Company, Storage Facility and 3-D Interactive Company.

Speaker Bio:

Carol Bellringer is the Auditor General for the Province of British Columbia and former Auditor General for the Province of Manitoba. Ms. Bellringer possesses an extensive background in conducting financial statement audits, performance audits, and investigations. A Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA), Ms. Bellringer holds a Bachelor of Commerce from Concordia University, Montreal, and an MBA from the Warsaw School of Economics/University of Quebec at Montreal. She was named a Fellow of the Chartered Accountants of Manitoba in 2006, and B.C. in 2015, in recognition of her contributions to the community and the profession. 

Prior to leading the Offices of the Auditor General in Manitoba and British Columbia, Ms. Bellringer served as the City Auditor for the City of Winnipeg, and has held management positions with KPMG in Montreal, Toronto, and Winnipeg, and with Media One International in Warsaw, Poland. She is also a former Director of Private Funding at the University of Manitoba. 

In addition to her professional experience, Ms. Bellringer has held several board positions for businesses, charities, and arts organizations. She currently serves on the board of the International Federation of Accountants and is a member of the Auditing and Assurance Standards Oversight Council. She is a past board member for the Manitoba Chapter of the Institute of Corporate Directors, the  Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, Manitoba Hydro, the Canadian Auditing and Assurance Standards Board, and CCAF-FCVI Inc.

Big News!

April 15, 2016 has been proclaimed Project Management Day in Victoria.

In addition to celebrating the PMI-VI chapter’s 20th anniversary this year, leaders from 16 other PMI chapters from all over the Pacific Northwest are convening in Victoria from April 15 to 17, 2016 to learn and enhance their ability to support project managers and the profession.

This is an amazing opportunity to let companies and individuals on Vancouver Island and elsewhere know the importance and value of the project management profession. The PMI-VI Board of Directors and Chapter members are very proud to have been recognized in this way” says PMI-VI President Patricia (Trish) Krol.
